Although I'm pretty good at most types of TDs (except Sanctum for some reason), this game gave me quite a challenge when it comes to getting a flawless victory (complete a level with full health) in Easy mode for many of the levels. Personally, I don't believe its "Easy" mode is at all easy - it's more like "normal". I also think the developers expect perfectionist players to return to the previous levels once they have sufficient upgrades just so they can grab a "3-star victory".
A quick tip by the way - in this game, you'll need to really use your spells and not only reserve them for emergencies. Not to mention, once you get the teleportation trap upgrade, make sure to make full use of it. As long as you're patient, you can easily make a ton of gold in a level simply by placing these traps at the front (a must) and/or end of a path (sometimes in the middle as well, but that's entirely optional). I often find myself ending a game with thousands of unspent gold because I've purchased all possible upgrades. If you get tired of waiting, you can always sell off your teleportation trap and let the mob through to your other traps :)
The game has fantastic music and some nice art as well. It is these graphics that caught my attention in the first place... not that simple-looking TDs are bad or anything, you know. In fact, one of the TDs I've enjoyed playing in the past is basically made up of neon triangles, squares, and circles. I really like the premise of the game as well, though the storyline is kind of a hit-and-miss for me.
Anyway, if you're not very good at TDs or if you're new to the genre, I'd recommend trying other games first before diving into this one, but if you're a veteran of the genre, then have at it - the game is challenging enough to be intriguing. There are multiple strategies you can use to clear a level easily but to get a flawless victory like what I was trying to do, that will take a bit more "strategizing", even for an "Easy" level, unfortunately.
A summary and some more game details:
- Fixed and limited "trap" placements
- 4 types of traps available to unlock. Each trap type can be further upgraded into 2 different subtypes.
- Upgrades available both in-game (using gold you earn by killing creeps) and out (via the forge)
- Has 5 types of spells. Each spell can be further upgraded through the forge
- Creeps can't damage the traps you place. Traps don't have durabilities.
- Challenge level: Pretty high even on Easy mode.
Thanks to Reforced for gifting this game. Although I enjoyed Fort Defense a lot more, Gnumz: Masters of Defense is still pretty fun and challenging to play.
