The game isn't kidding when it says that the game is very accessible to newcomers.
To clarify, I've played at most 1 round of Street Fighter in my entire life and I've "played" it by button smashing... lol. So, despite my total lack of skill, I was mostly able to clear the game on either Sleepwalker or Easy mode, except for Fukua's Filia level - darn you, Filia! - and Peacock's final boss level where you battle Marie, allowing me to experience most of the wonderfully written and drawn character stories (one story per character and there are tons of characters here!) in the game.
In fact, buttons being smashed aside, I really like how the game connects every character story into a single narrative - the story of how they managed to acquire the Skull Heart and what they did with it. FYI, The Skull Heart is a powerful artifact that grants its owner one wish. However, the twist here is that if the person making the wish is of impure heart (or intentions), then the wish-maker will eventually be corrupted by the Skull Heart and will become the next "Skullgirl" a.k.a. the bearer/protector of the Skull Heart.
I should also point out that the game uses "controller"-style controls and it doesn't really tell you that. You'll probably figure it out yourself though. If you're not familiar with controllers like I do, you'll want to drop by its Option menu and memorize the keys for all your attack skills, just so you know which key to press to perform combo actions. You can customize the keys via the Options too if you want. The tutorial is incredibly helpful here as well. If you're new the genre, you'll want to check that out!
Not to mention, since the game is set in the 1960s (I think?), there are plenty of pretty cool jazz music in the game.
However, if you're hoping to play multiplayer in this game, well, due to the small player base, it can be hard for you to find someone, let alone someone of your skill level, to play with.... unless you've got a friend or two who are interested in a couple of duels.

Overall
Even if you're not such a huge fan of fighting games, Skullgirls is worth snapping up, especially during a sale, just for its intriguing storyline, but if you're actually fan of fighting games, then there is no reason for you to not buy this game when you can. It's really amazing and this is coming from someone who button-smashed her way to the end of the game on the lowest or second lowest difficulty level for most characters :PSide note
