As a non-VR title, this is super barebones and not something worth buying (yet?). SoS has the makings of a nice indie space shooter but there's just not enough here to make it a worthy buy.
The visuals in SoS are really nice for an indie project, with the included photo mode you can stage some pretty neat non-combat shots of friend and enemy vessels. The soundtrack is amazing, I could see myself putting it on loop as it's equal parts relaxing yet heroic. Each faction has fairly unique ship designs, unusual in smaller scale games and the main thing which will keep you playing until you've flown them all.
Unfortunately, what this non-VR release gets wrong is a bigger list. You cannot capture planets as there is no menu when clicking on them, rendering the core of the game unplayable. Keyboard controls are a mystery beyond W and S for thrust and T for marking other ships. Trying to take a screenshot breaks the entire game, usually causing you to float outside your ship (I believe this is the photo mode, although it comes across as a bug). Closing the game is impossible outside of using Task Manager to kill the process. Last but not least, there's honestly at most a half hour or maybe 40 minutes of content here tops, it really feels like an early build of an unfinished game rather than a full release.
Should all the negatives change, and perhaps toss in a few "kill X enemies of each faction" achievements to give it a bit of longevity, I could see myself saying to buy Symphony of Stars. But as it is right now, don't go near this.
