8-Bit Adventures is a delightful homage to the old NES games of my childhood <3
I'll admit, the first couple hours of this game it feels pretty cliché, and I found myself wondering if it tried so hard to evoke the feeling of those old school games that it was going to feel like I'd played the game before, but despite a slow start up it does manage to create its own unique story.
The story itself is well written, I didn't notice any errors in any of the dialogue and there was actual character development when it came to the three main characters which is always nice.
I have very few complaints about the game:
No notification on level up
• It would have been nice if, after the battle ended, there was a little pop up that said [So-and-so levelled up! Stat changes! Skills!] instead of in the next battle you suddenly have new skills in your menu .—.
Enemy sprites are ugly
• While it gives them a sort of... hand-crafted charm I guess, I'd prefer if they were either cutesy or cool-looking.
Otherwise my complaints are strictly based on the RPGMaker program they used to make it, which I don't really blame them for, it's just... unfortunate.
• Can't use steam overlay so you can't take screenshots and achievements don't pop in-game
• Initial controller set-up is difficult
• Have to use Alt+Enter for Fullscreen
Anyway, the game is pretty fun, the creators took their time to compose original music, create original art assets and sound effects, and write a relatively original story that takes at least 10 hours to finish.
It goes as cheap as $4.00 pretty often if you feel like waiting for a sale, but you'll get a $1 an hour even if you buy it at full price; so if you're looking for a nostalgia fix in the vein of Dragon Quest then give this one a play.
