NBA Playgrounds is a basketball arcade game where you play in a team of two going against your adversaries. NBA Playgrounds includes a roster of both active and former NBA stars. Both local and online multiplayer modes are included in the game, although local mode requires an internet connection to function on PS4. Players fill up a roster of players by playing different modes to earn packs.

In the game you have the capability to do dunks, ally-oops, 3-pointer shots and dribble and your objective is to defeat your opponent. The objective is to hit a higher score than your opponent in order to move to the next phase of the game. Each location is divided by 4 matches, one being semi-final and the other final.

This game really impressed me by how simple, yet how fun it can be. Although I had moments where I was losing or getting dunked, I can say that even in those moments this game shines and is impressive to behold. I was literally cheering for my enemy's dunks. It's very flashy and impressive and it's something I loved playing for 20+ hours.

The game isn't something I can say that is appealing to me, but overall, it looks pretty polished and interesting. Each NBA player is following a caricature of the actual player that resembles a little bit the real player. The overall look looks rather goofy and fun and fits the whole style of the game.

Music in this game is great, although after listening to the same menu tracks, I can say that it can get on my nerves. The menu has an interesting sound design where you hear a basketball sound when selecting and move in the menu. I thought that was a nice and fine touch. In game, the commentator isn't that impressive after you've played a couple of games, but it does have some funny lines. After a while it becomes rather repetitive.

The main "story" in this game is to get over a tournament and it doesn't follow any narrative line whatsoever. If you're looking for that in this game, you may need to play other NBA's.

This game can be accomplished a lot sooner if it wasn't for the 100% mark. It fits great to be played on the Steam Deck as each match lasts between 2-5 minutes. Great for playing a few matches or finishing a whole area.

Although the game isn't super difficult to unlock and finish each tournament location, the real difficulty comes from getting the challenges completed to 100%. Luckily, you don't have to finish all of them, but until you reach Las Vegas to get 100% achievements.

NBA Playgrounds is a fun and entertaining basketball game that brings me back 15+ years. I really enjoyed the core gameplay in this game and I highly recommend playing it if you have it, if not consider getting the 2nd one.
