Cat Quest is a classic adventure with a simple yet twisted main story with a variety of flavorful side quests. While it has its merits, a few notable drawbacks might leave some players with mixed feelings.
Navigation:
Navigating the world of Cat Quest can be a bit of a mixed bag. The lack of fast travel and initial slow movement on the map make extensive quests a tedious affair. Fortunately, as you progress, new movement options like water walking and flying are unlocked, alleviating some of the early frustrations. On the same note, the absence of a dash ability can make dungeon exploration a bit annoying. The controls, unfortunately, aren't customizable, adding a layer of discomfort for players with specific preferences (AZERTY Keyboards).Story:
The main storyline strikes a balance between simplicity and complexity. The side quests, each with their own flavor (although mostly bland), add more spice to the soup.BGM and Sound:
The background music, while not terrible, falls short of being memorable and tends to become repetitive. I switched to my own playlist after a while. The constant sound of chests opening, given the abundance of chests in the game, might become irksome over time.Combat and Gameplay:
The combat system is fluid enough that it will allow you to fight your way even if the monsters are stronger than you, as long as you can dodge the telegraphed attacks fast enough. There is a soft lock from what I noticed, though, making the monsters need more hits even when they are at 0 HP to kill them when they are way too strong for your level. Achievement-wise, the game is a grindfest. Beating the game itself is a matter of hours (4 in my case while playing it safe), but to get all achievements, you will have to reach level 99, do all side quests (apart from like 4-5), and beat the game in mew game (not the same as the new game+ you unlock) mode MULTIPLE TIMES with different modifiers each time. Conclusion:
If you're a casual gamer who enjoys a short quest & story and maybe additional lore in the form of side quests, then by all means, this is the game for you. If you're a completionist like me, it's still a fun game to play, but the repetitiveness and meaningless grind needed to get all achievements make this game somewhat less enjoyable. While I like some difficulty, the way the replayability is added (making enemies stronger by giving them more HP and more damage and restrictions put on you) is not the kind of difficulty I enjoy.
