TL;DR: FAIR WARNING: DO NOT ALT TAB FROM THE GAME. BAD SH!T COULD HAPPEN WHEN IN BACKGROUND!
Okay, this is one of those "YES, BUT" reviews. I'll try to keep it short.
Up until today I'd had undoubtly recommended this, BUT a glaring silly err mishap throw me way off!
I had to do something else quick so I left the esc menu pause and alt-tabbed from the game. Did not noticed that the menu options continued to move AND BE PRESSED! no warning, no ask for permission, nada.
When I got back I noticed the entire map was new, all my stuff, bases buildings, teleports, etc and all but 5 monkeys were ALL GONE!
After a bit of research it seems that the regenerate world or NEW GAME+ or something like that happened, without confirmation, while on background!.
At this point I'm not sure I want to continue playing. I'm not sure how close or far I was from the ending but I was so NOT READY nor prepared to start anew..
Why do it like this, why!? there are like 12 FAKE save slots which you can't use, ALL saves are not really backups cause all are the same, same time stamps, different name. Trying to manually recover resulted in the game claiming the saves were corrupted and deleting them. Even steam cloud backup was ruined; even when I figured what just had happened I killed the process, in (stupid) hopes it would NOT save and could return to previous. No dice, nada.
This is PC gaming folks, there's no mods, there's no more than 1 single slot for saves, even having 12 revisions is complete and utterly useless.
The only reason I dont slap a not recommended is cause it's already on the edge, the devs dont seem to care, up until today I did enjoyed the game (47 hs played until typing this review) and sigh, guess I just wanted to vent and WARN whomever think to play this. CAREFUL! do not alt-tab and click or hit enter. ALWAYS shut off the game! treat it like a lobotomized console/handheld port; nothing more.
Oh, well now that I've cooled off a bit, realised didn't mention anything else, like at all :P
So, I like the somewhat repetitive music but sure matches the pixel art, reminiscent of the old era..
I like the graphics and animations. Movement is okay, bats are sneaky quick b@stards!
I dont like items ocupying the exact same spot; drop more than one and they just overlap eachother, so it's trickier to pick up the one(s) you really want. The whole UI needs a tweakup, or an overhaul. Monkeys MOVE when you want to give'em an item or a chest for them to carry, gotta chase them or order them to stay then follow. Sometimes they dont follow you or do the action you intend them to do, such as cook or build, idk why. I've found black squares like bug-textures on some spots on different islands, often aren't back and just yellow (sand) so it's not easily noticeable. Monkeys sometimes flee your raft and you have to manouver it back to shore, call'em up and make double/triple sure they're on board so they don't straggle again.
Would like a clear way to know I've already completed a laberynt/maze/dungeon/whatever, I've marked those but I read that you can only have 20 custom marks total on your map so... Maybe way too many table stations? less is more, no?
Cheers. Sorry, it turned out not so short after all..
